A hygiene visit here covers the plaque and tartar a toothbrush cannot reach, plus a check of your gums, your bite and the bone supporting your teeth. We provide fluoride treatment to patients of all ages at each re-exam appointment, because it strengthens enamel, helps remineralize early decay, and calms tooth sensitivity. For years we have offered an alternative to traditional periodontal surgery for controlling gum disease. Our hygiene department provides the therapy, called scaling and root planing, using ProSelect ultrasonic scalers that remove plaque and calculus above and below the gumline more efficiently. This is our first line of defense: get the disease under control and, where possible, avoid a more aggressive surgical procedure.

Molars come in with deep pits and grooves that a toothbrush simply cannot reach, which is why they are the most common place we find decay. A sealant is a clear or shaded plastic coating applied to that chewing surface, sealing the grooves against plaque and acid. It is painless and needs no anesthesia. Sealants can be placed at any age, but they give the best protection when applied soon after permanent teeth come in, so we treat them as a normal part of care for the children in our practice.

Very young children are invited to the office at no cost, just to get familiar with the surroundings and meet the staff. It builds confidence and cooperation, and it gives us and you a chance to trade information. We suggest a first visit around age two, and many parents schedule it while they are in for their own hygiene appointment so their child can be seen by another one of our providers. We continue these no-charge visits until your child is comfortable enough with the office and the staff to move on to a real hygiene visit.

Once we find decay or a fractured tooth, there are usually several ways to fix it. Options include silver amalgam fillings, tooth-colored composite resin fillings, gold or tooth-colored porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, Captek crowns, full porcelain crowns, bridges and veneers. We walk you through the choices, including how each one looks, how long it tends to last and what it costs you, then recommend what makes the most sense for your particular tooth.

The pulp inside a tooth holds its nerves and blood vessels. When decay or trauma leaves it inflamed or infected beyond repair, a root canal removes the pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them with a filling material called gutta percha. Afterward the tooth is more brittle and more likely to fracture, so the best long-term outcome comes from restoring it properly with a buildup and a crown. We will explain that second step before you start, not after.

An implant is a metal post placed in the jawbone, where it fuses to the bone and acts as a tooth root. A replacement tooth is then made to fit onto it. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or help stabilize a denture. The surgical placement is done by specialists in the region, from Marquette to Green Bay, and then you come back to us, where we fabricate the abutment and the crown that sit on top.

A missing tooth can be replaced in several ways, and the right answer depends on how many teeth are gone, where they are, and what you want from the result. Many adults develop gum recession that exposes root surfaces, and those surfaces react sharply to hot and cold. A desensitizing agent applied topically is easy, painless and has helped a lot of our patients. If cold drinks make you wince, ask us about it at your next visit.

Jaw clicking, headaches, earaches, limited opening, tender jaw muscles and dull aching facial pain often trace back to the temporomandibular joint. These problems are grouped together as TMJ disorders, or TMD. The causes are not fully understood, but the best treatment to date is straightforward: a hard acrylic bitesplint. It is conservative, fully reversible, and has strong success rates. You wear it overnight, or whenever the problem is worst, and most people get real relief. The same appliance protects teeth from the wear and damage caused by grinding.

Teeth come out for a few common reasons: a crack or extensive decay that cannot be restored, a patient's own decision about cost, or preventive removal of wisdom teeth in teens and young adults. When extraction is the answer, we provide it for most patients here in our own office, so you are not waiting weeks for an oral surgeon's opening or paying for a costly referral. If a case truly needs a specialist, we will say so.

Four of our hygienists hold state licensure to administer nitrous oxide sedation and to give local anesthesia, on top of their hygiene licenses. That matters if dental appointments make you anxious: comfort options are available in the hygiene chair as well as in the dentist's chair. Whitening is the thing patients ask us about most. We use Opalescence, chosen because it is one of the best materials known not to harm teeth. We take impressions, make you custom trays, and you whiten at home whenever it suits you. We record your starting shade so the improvement is measurable rather than a guess, and we are available along the way if anything needs adjusting.

X-rays let us find and confirm things you cannot see or feel yet: early decay, impacted teeth, abscesses, bone loss from gum disease, and cysts or tumors. We take appropriate images at your first exam and update them at recall appointments as needed. The decay-detecting bitewing and the panoramic view of the jaw are the two we use most. Our Marquette office has upgraded to digital imaging, which gives us the clearest diagnostic picture and lets us put your images on screen and look at them with you.
